Marvelous Designer Tutorial – Jacket

MD4 Tutorial - Asymmetrical Leather Jacket

One of my YouTube subscribers, Anton Glukhovsky, asked if I would do a tutorial on asymmetrical patterns in Marvelous Designer. I asked him if he had a particular design in mind and he was kind enough to provide an image. Originally, I was going to create the garment he provided by reverse engineering it in Marvelous Designer. Unfortunately, that didn’t work out, but I was able to use the image as inspiration in designing another jacket that I rebuilt in the tutorial.

The tutorial goes over how to turn a regular two piece front into an asymmetrical design. It also shows how you can insert and ‘extra’ panel of fabric for layering. There is a rather strange collar involved in the jacket design, and I show how to make virtually any collar shape using your existing pattern pieces.

I used the stock MD4 avatar, so you can fit the garment properly and play around with it. If you want to see any other types of tutorials, just let me know.

How do you make cover stitches (stitches covering the seam lines) in MD4?

If you are talking about stitches as in texture, you have to put a fabric texture on the pattern piece. MD isn’t really the best program for this. I use Blender to add depth and details to my work, utilizing bump maps.

We call these pleats in the US. I sent you an email with an MD project file that I did a couple years ago. It’s a really simple example, but I think it may help. Thanks for contacting me.

i watch your tutorials.its really helping i don’t have enough knowledge about fashion designing.i have always facing problem with fitting.i don’t have any pattern making software.can you plz help me how can i start in Marvelous Designerso that i can get butter fitting .also i am not able to download the free materials.

as i am working in Dreamworks animation studio we just start working in this we need more information about it .if possible plz help me.

Hi bapi,
I’m glad the tutorials are helping. Most people who work in 3D don’t have any experience in fashion design, so it is a common challenge. The best way to get well fitting garments is to draft the patterns in another program and then bring them into Marvelous Designer to sew and simulate. I have just started a new series on this process. Please refer to this post Introduction – Patterns in Marvelous Designer.

I don’t know why you can’t download the files in my store. No one has had a problem in the past. Can you tell me what the difficulty is?
